“I LOVED Brushstrokes courses! I'm not a naturally talented artist but I did enjoy art at school and my hard work and perseverance got me a GCSE A grade. That was half my life ago and I have been feeling for a long time that I'd like to explore my creative side (without putting a huge amount of effort into it).

More as a way of meeting new people and filling my time in a new town I signed up for Brushstrokes courses. I absolutely loved it! I learnt so much about different materials and drawing techniques and styles. Laura is an excellent teacher and clearly has a passion for both art and teaching. She was a good balance of encouraging and full of helpful hacks and advice for improving.

I have been really impressed and proud of the work that I have done in this class and it has inspired me to play around between sessions. I now feel much more confident in trying techniques and playing with drawing styles independently.

One thing that was particularly helpful was that, because I often work in London I had to move from the face to face to the online classes. This was super helpful for me because even though I couldn't commit to 6 weeks face to face there were other options to ensure I could still keep up with the lessons. I would either do a session on a Saturday morning or a Monday evening online. I was very grateful to Brushstrokes for being flexible and allowing me to mix and match the format.”

Previously, I had done a couple of art classes at colleges, and the frustration is that you are expected to just get on with it. As a beginner that can be very daunting. My favourite (very important) aspect of the course this time was for myself to realise how much I could achieve within the limited time I had each week. I have suffered from back/neck/shoulders/wrist pains after over a year of working from home, a long period of time not taking much break during office hours, and frequently working overtime.

I have learnt to relax more mentally and try to balance between my work/life/hobby if I were to do them all. Laura’s art course has helped me immensely with my stress management. I now can take on a lot more without having to panic much about my heavy workload. This is another benefit that I was not expected from taking on this course.
