Learn how to use oil paint, elevate your technique, gain inspiration, and discover your creative style with still life.
How do artists put together an oil painting? What materials, mediums, varnishes, paintbrushes are needed for an oil painting? How do artists build up layers of oil paint to achieve depth?
On this course, we will look at how to create a classic still life painting using techniques passed down from the early Renaissance Masters through to contemporary artists. We will draw inspiration from the classics, but with an emphasis on colour and brush work to create a vibrant still life composition.
Across the six weeks, you will learn how to use gesture, open & closed grisaille, and how to add those finishing touches of detail that will bring your work to life.
How is the Course Structured?
The Beginners & Mixed Media classes will contain Step-By-Step Guides and resources to support those who need it, as well as intermediate - advanced options for more confident artists.
The Mixed Ability Classes will still contain the Beginners Guides for those who need it, as well as more challenging references for the intermediate & advanced artist. These classes also contain Extension options to inspire more confident artists to create their own compositions.
The Beginners & Mixed Media class will take place on:
Tuesday mornings, 9:15 AM – 12:15 PM.
The Mixed Ability classes will take place:
TUES 1:15 PM – 4:15 PM,
WED 9:15 AM – 12:15 PM
WED 1:15 PM – 4:15 PM.
The Venue:
There is free parking in front of and behind All Saints Church Hall.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be made available at the beginning of each class, as well as the half way tea break as part of the course.

Refund Policy
• If a course is cancelled by Brushstrokes Courses due to Covid-19, or any other reason, and cannot be moved online, you will be fully reimbursed for any classes that have not been delivered.
• If a student misses a class due to sickness, holiday, or any other reason, no refunds or discounts can unfortunately be given. Course notes, guides and materials will be distributed for missed sessions.
Materials
Materials are included within the cost of the course unless you have opted to bring your own paintbrushes.
The Personal Paint Brush set includes: 6 Professional Oil Paint Brushes and a carry roll to transport your brushes.
Due to the nature of oil paints, you will be asked to take your paintbrushes home to clean, which you can do with either a bar of strong soap, or a paint cleaner (non-solvent based cleaners as well as white spirit is available to purchase at most good hardware stores or art supply shops).
Due to limited storage at the venue, you will also be given your painting to take home with you and bring back the following week. I suggest using bin liners underneath your work to avoid getting paint in the car.
Materials may be available to purchase from Brushstrokes via cash or contactless in class upon request.
